David R. Schmidt, M.D., received his medical degree and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he was named the 2002 Distinguished Medical Alumnus. He completed fellowships in sports medicine and knee surgery in Sydney, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand.
Dr. Schmidt has been in private practice since 1986. He served as physician for the U.S. Olympic Festival, the World University Games in Japan, the Olympic Games in Atlanta and the NBA All-Star Game. He currently serves as the team physician for the NBA San Antonio Spurs, the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) athletics, Trinity University and many local high schools.
He was named the NBATA Team Physician of the Year in 2004, and was awarded the 2007 Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award by the United States Sports Academy. He currently serves as president elect of the NBA Physicians Association.
Dr. Schmidt is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His expertise is in knee surgery and cartilage repair/restoration.
